Five 90s Leprechaun Films You Might Not Know

By now, most of us know the 1993 film “Leprechaun” starring Warick Davis and a very young Jennifer Aniston in her film debut. There are also over half-dozen sequels spanning three decades. But can you name any other leprechaun movies from the 1990s? I couldn’t, but it turns out there were plenty of other leprechaun films in the 90s, some starring familiar faces. So, this St. Patrick’s Day, slice your corned beef, grab a pint of Guinness and watch these five 90s leprechaun films you might not know.

Getting Lucky (1990)

This near-no-budget Troma production features a nerd who’s in love with a cheerleader. He can’t score a date with her though because she likes the jock. Any more 80s and early 90s character tropes for us Troma? Anyway, the nerd encounters an alcoholic leprechaun in an empty beer bottle and, like a kind of inebriated genie, must grant our nerd three wishes before he’s aloud to return to his homeland. Given that the leprechaun is a drunkard, and this is a Troma movie, you can expect things will not go without shenanigans and malarkey.

Leapin’ Leprechauns (1995)

Moonlight Entertainment’s direct-to-video gem, “Leapin’ Leprechauns”, follows a group of wee leprechauns as they infest the home of a developer who wants to build an amusement park on their habitat called “Ireland Land”. Why would one want to build Ireland Land in Ireland if Ireland is already there? Probably because this movie was filmed in Romania. They even had the gonads to film its sequel, “Spellbreaker: The Secret of the Leprechauns” ala LOTR style at the same time. Now that’s confidence!

A Very Unlucky Leprechaun (1998)

Warwick Davis took a break from playing a terrifying, serial murdering Leprechaun to play a good-hearted but unlucky one named, wait for it… “Lucky”, in “A Very Unlucky Leprechaun”. An American family moves to Ireland after the inheritance of a house, but unluckily, owe money on it and will lose it. You can probably guess that, although unlucky, “Lucky” is magical and goes on whacky adventures with the daughter to try and save their house. The flying, magic alien with a kid on a bike in E.T. doesn’t do it for you? Try a flying, magic leprechaun with a kid in a soapbox car. Its sooo much better. Trust me.

The White Pony (1999)

Warick Davis was extremely busy in the 1990s playing leprechauns! 1999 saw the release of “Leprechaun 4: In Space” with Warick reprising his role as the terrifying, murderous leprechaun monster killing people… in space. That same year also saw the release of “The White Pony”, a super rated-G production with Warrick starring as a leprechaun named… wait for it… wait for it… LUCKY! No, for real! His name is “Lucky” and he helps an injured girl “get back on the horse” so to speak or something like that. It doesn’t matter because I can’t get over the fact that Warrick Davis played the most benign and malignant of leprechauns in 1999.

The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns (1999)

“The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns” was a relatively star-studded television miniseries that broadcast on NBC in 1999. It starred the likes of Randy Quaid, Whoopi Goldberg, and real-life Irishman, and DS9 engineer, Colm Meaney. In this miniseries, an American spends his holiday in Ireland and encounters leprechauns and fairies. There’s also a love story about a leprechaun and a fairy who fall in love or something. I went on holiday in Ireland for almost a month and didn’t see one leprechaun or fairy. I fell in love numerous times but it wasn’t reciprocated. I have a feeling this film might be a fantasy. You can stream this miniseries on Amazon.

Well, there you have it: Five leprechaun movies from the 1990s you likely didn’t even know about. So now, if you are tired of being terrified by scary Leprechaun movie marathons on St. Patrick’s Day, try giving a few of these more lighthearted leprechaun movies a try. And remember this: Warick Davis played two different leprechauns in two separate movies named “Lucky”, and I now know how to spell “leprechaun” without looking it up.
